Ammily was born from love. And from watching what happens when connection fades.

My granny's transformation was extraordinary. She had been living with early onset dementia, declining fast, increasingly distant from the person she had always been. Then she came to stay with us. With daily company, good food, movement, fresh air, and people around her who genuinely cared — she changed. Her clarity returned. Her warmth returned. Her sense of self returned.

It was remarkable. And it was simple. Not a medical intervention. Not a programme. Just connection. Just being part of life.

My grandad's experience taught me something different but equally important. As he began to lose his independence, it wasn't just his physical ability that changed - it was his confidence, his purpose, his sense that he still mattered. The world gradually stopped asking him things. Stopped needing him. And that loss, quieter than any diagnosis, was its own kind of decline.

Those two experiences sat with me for a long time. Combined with years of working in and around retirement communities, they pointed to the same gap: we wait too long. We wait until someone is in crisis before we think about connection, purpose, and belonging. And by then, so much has already quietly slipped away.

Ammily exists because of that gap. Not as a care service. Not as a wellness programme. As a community — warm, local, rooted in Norfolk — where people feel connected to others, to the natural world around them, and to life itself.

We are not here to manage anyone's retirement. We are here to make it worth living

Ammily is run by two of us, from home, in Norfolk. We started it because we believe older people deserve something better than just a club. Something that treats them as the capable, experienced, knowledgeable people they are. Something that gives them a voice, not just a seat at the table, if they so wish.

We are building the thing we wish had existed for our grandparents. And we are building it here, in Norfolk, because this county — its coastline, its marshes, its ancient woodlands, its extraordinary communities is worth building it around.
